Our text for this week is Ephesians 5:10:

This simple statement encompasses the highest and most noble purpose of man. There is nothing we can ever do that is more important, more powerful, more fruitful, and have a longer lasting impact on the world, than living our life so we please the Lord.

A few years ago a major study revealed that the ultimate question that people have is this: What is my purpose? This was the main question regardless of race, religion, or lack of religion. This could only be the result of there being an inherent destiny that is created in the heart of every human being. Interestingly, even those who do not believe in God believed that they are here for a purpose. The Scriptures confirm what all of our hearts tell us—we all have a destiny, a purpose. Seeking our destiny is a quest that adds richness, depth, and fulfillment in experiencing life.

We can and will spend eternity getting to know the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and I don't think we will ever exhaust what can be learned. For all of the increase of knowledge that we have experienced on earth in the last century, one doctor told me that the most we know about the human body is maybe as much as 30 percent. When I asked him how much he thought psychiatrists knew about the mind, he estimated 5 percent. I think we know even less about the spirit of man.

In the Lord’s discourse about the signs of the end of the age, He gave us a very important timetable in Matthew 24:32-34:

This week we continue our study with one of the more enigmatic verses in this great epistle, Ephesians 5:21:

On December 3, 2001, twenty-eight Christian leaders with national and international ministries gathered in Moravian Falls, North Carolina for three days to seek the Lord for clarity and direction concerning the critical issues of our times. This Word for the Week ministry is a way that we are seeking to methodically sink our roots deeper into sound biblical truth, as well as the important spiritual issues of our times. For this reason we want to delve a little deeper into the text that we studied last week, Ephesians 4:11-13, which is one of the most succinct declarations of the purpose of the church in Scripture.

A couple of years ago the media coverage of a few shark attacks made it seem that the waters were churning with killers on a rampage. Millions fled the beaches out of fear and a great many have not yet returned. What really happened is that there were fewer newsworthy stories that summer than normal. The shark attacks caught the public’s interest, so the media rode this story for as long as they could, dramatizing every attack more than what normally would have been covered.

         We have been discussing how the Apostle Paul became a disciple of the kingdom of heaven. He gave a remarkable explanation of this in Philippians 3:10-14:

          that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
